Turquoise is a blue stone with a fascinating history, which traveled the entire Silk Road before arriving in Europe.
Pliny the Elder refers to turquoise under the name of "callais", which shows that it has been known since Antiquity. The Egyptians, 6000 years BC, exploited it in the Sinai peninsula: turquoise bracelets were thus found on the arms of the mummy of Zar, queen of the first dynasty, almost 5500 years BC. -C. In America, before the discovery of this continent by Christopher Columbus, the Anasazi Indians mined turquoise in the southwest of the continent. For the American Indians, this stone had a sacred dimension and was the object of different beliefs. Some like the Apaches believed that it contained both the spirits of the sea and the sky to protect them. Others like the Navajo thought it was a piece of heaven fallen to the earth. For the Zunis, turquoise protected them from demons. And the Aztecs reserved it for the gods, because they believed that the stone could not be carried by mortals. So they decorated masks and other sacred objects with this stone.
